When I look at kids, I not only see potential, but something that needs to be protected. When you consider that parents provide a roof over their heads, teach them what they need to know to be adults and help them make responsible choices, you can see that there is a lot of pressure riding on our shoulders. In fact, my choices can affect their lives long after I am gone, so I have tried to make responsible choices when it comes to my own children. So, that means that I have tried to go out of my way to protect my children from my habits.
When you consider the far reaching effects of a habit, you never really think about the effect that your habits may have on other people. For example, the alcoholic is fixated on their next drink, but they don’t really think about how their behavior while they are drinking may affect others around them. Thankfully, alcohol was never really my thing and I didn’t have to worry about how my drinking may affect my kids. But my habit that had potentially bad consequences for my children was smoking.
I had started smoking back when I was a teenager as many of my heroes of the time where from western movies. So, I had always envisioned myself as a cowboy on a horse smoking my cigarette. So, I started smoking at a young age and it is a habit that has followed me throughout my life. But when my wife and I had children, I knew that I had to make sure that my choices didn’t affect them.
At first, I would always go outside if I needed a cigarette, and I never smoked in the car if they were with us. Sometimes it was inconvenient, but I wanted to make sure that I thought about them first. Thankfully, I have been able to smoke electronic cigarettes now for the past few months and I don’t have to spend most of my time outside any longer. Since they do not release carcinogens like traditional cigarettes, I am able to enjoy my habit without hurting my kids.
